creating a culture of belonging, one child at a time.
As the storyline goes, the Cradle-to-Prison nexus represents the cumulative impact—beginning before birth and remaining throughout their childhood and into their teen years—that disproportionately diverts black and brown children, and children living below the poverty line in the direction of the criminal legal system.
At The Play Lab Foundation, we believe that liberation begins at birth and our mission is to reroute the cradle to prison (C2P) nexus that unjustly affects BIPOC children, neurodivergent children and children from homes facing economic instability. At the Play Lab we are disrupting the narrative by providing essential services and support to our communities starting at birth and extending to their families. We believe that children need more than food, shelter, and clothing to thrive and include autonomy, agency, and joy as fundamental basic needs on their path to belonging.
QAE /kwá/ also known as quality, access, and equity, is often omitted when speaking of the disparities that befall BIPOC children and those who live in a certain socioeconomic status. The Play Lab foundation is dedicated to providing QAE to all children, because all children have the right to high quality care.
The Play Lab envisions a world where where children feel both physically and mentally safe within their care environment, are valued by their caregivers, and know that they belong. and we strive to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. This requires having staff that is culturally, developmentally, and trauma informed. It requires having staff who understand best practice, and have the experience to appreciate its value. Every child benefits from time spent in natural settings but due to proximity to green, blue, and yellow* spaces, issues of safety, lack of resources and mental barriers, not every child has access. At the Play Lab we believe that every deserves access to safe natural environments and have even created a work around that can be implemented in any safe space! The concept of scarcity is pervasive in learning spaces. Lack of trusting relationships, resources, access, materials, nutritious sustenance, and opportunity are like conduits running through the C2P interchange. At The Play Lab, we work tirelessly to ensure our children know that they are enough and we believe that QAE is not exclusive to race, privilege, demographic, or neurotype. Play Lab's mission is to create a world where every child has access to high quality care in spaces where their individual genius is celebrated, they have access to time spent in nature, and the opportunity to learn through play. We believe that by committing to the collective care of children, we are pushing the needle toward the sustainability of our future society.
At The Play Lab Foundation, we believe that QAE is not exclusive to race, privilege, demographic, or neurotype and our vision is to provide a child-centered, holistic approach to care that not only provide a child's basic needs but exceeds those needs by investing in family engagement, meaningful relationships, and continued education of our staff.
Over the years, we have impacted the lives of many children through our various programs and services. We have provided safety and belonging, offered resources to families and that care and dedication has resulted in hundreds of children thriving in and throughout their school experience. We are proud of the positive impact we have made in their lives.

At The Play Lab, we envision a world where every child has access to self- affirming care, meaningful experiences, ample time spent outdoors and long stretches of uninterrupted play. We understand that while the resources they need to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life are not always tangible, under resourced learning spaces and educators struggle often have unmet needs and which makes it hard to meet the children in their care. We strive to create a world where everyone-Practitioners and children alike- have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Our organization is built on a foundation of respect, empowerment, and belonging and the Play Lab believes that each action is integral to nurturing the whole child. In oder to incorporate this into a learning model that disrupts the status quo. Disrupters believe in children and childhood, understand that practitioners and Care-workers, and agree that quality care is not a matter of privilege, but a human right. Disrupters support our effort to provide self-affirming quality childcare, pay our providers an equitable wage, and provide invaluable resources to the families and communities that we serve.
The Play Lab is made up of dedicated professionals and volunteers who are passionate about making a difference in the children and families in and around our community. But our mission can not be realized by dedication and experience alone. In order to realize our vision we will need to provide our practitioners with the training that ensure the they are developmentally informed and responsive to the needs of each child and the ability to provide quality care to children regardless of their inability to pay.
We also require accessible housing for children with varying abilities, ample room to run, jump & play, substantial space for outdoor learning, proximity to green space. Finally we require the ability to provide transportation to children who wouldn't be able to benefit from our services because they do not have adequate means of getting to our place of childhood.
The Play Lab relies on collaboration with our Big Wish Benefactors to actualize our vision of providing the quality self affirming care that each child deserves.
